Rohingyas’ Deportation Urgent Amid Security Threats

The police have launched an extensive operation on the network of support that helps Rohingyas in the Jammu region. The operation affects six districts: Jammu, Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Rajouri, and Poonch. Following the operation, fourteen FIRs were filed, seven of which were centered in the Jammu region. This led to the arrest and detention of around fifty people, including seven married couples. The subsequent potential deportation of these illegal immigrants marks a significant development, signifying the first major coordinated police effort against those aiding Rohingyas’ settlement in Jammu. This support system involves providing essential documents such as Aadhaar, ration, and voter cards, arranging accommodation, and facilitating utility connections.

The recent arrests have brought to light Rohingyas’ attempts to integrate into the local population by acquiring necessary documents, raising concerns about potential security threats. The gravity of the situation becomes apparent as Rohingyas have managed to spread across six districts, indicating a meticulously planned network for their permanent settlement. Their infiltration extends to establishing themselves in the system, opening bank accounts, acquiring electricity and water connections, and obtaining essential documents like Aadhaar cards, ration cards, and domicile certificates. This exposes significant lapses in the Know Your Customer (KYC) processes of various departments, including Jal Shakti and the Power Development Department. The exploitation of rented plots for makeshift shelters, facilitated by a negligent tenancy verification process, exacerbates the situation. The execution of rent agreements is occurring without proper scrutiny, highlighting a major security lapse. The presence of Rohingyas in close proximity to army installations and oil depots raises serious questions about the efficacy of local policing. The complex and troubling nature of these settlements is evident in instances where local individuals marry Rohingya girls and when a local person facilitates all necessary documents for his Rohingya son-in-law. The presence of unchecked clusters of makeshift shelters underscores a prolonged inaction by the authorities, constituting a significant security lapse. Since a large number of Rohingyas are currently being held in detention centers in Kathua, the UT government must notify the Central Government of the rapidly worsening situation and start the deportation process of Rohingyas. It is admirable that the Jammu and Kashmir Police have recently taken an aggressive stance in capturing individuals who aid illegal migrants and provide them with refuge. A strong warning that helping them remain in the UT will not be accepted ought to act as a disincentive.  Rigorous and exemplary actions on the ground are vital deterrents. The Police’s simultaneous registration of 14 FIRs across six districts showcases the result of meticulous groundwork by the intelligence wing.

Rohingyas pose a substantial threat to regional security, and locals must refrain from employing or providing shelter to them. In this digital age, attempts to conceal such activities are futile, and individuals should approach local police stations for tenant verifications. Immediate action against all locals involved is imperative, and information gathered from those detained can potentially unveil the intricate interstate network. Urgent redressal of the Rohingya issue is vital amid existing challenges in Jammu and Kashmir. The decisive steps taken thus far, coupled with sustained efforts by the Jammu and Kashmir Police, offer hope for resolving this pressing issue.

In short, the Jammu and Kashmir government faces a critical juncture in addressing the Rohingyas’ settlement issue. Urgent and decisive action is imperative to safeguard regional security. Initiatives include enhancing KYC processes across departments, improving tenancy verification protocols, and implementing stricter scrutiny of rent agreements. The government should collaborate with intelligence agencies to dismantle the intricate network supporting Rohingyas’ infiltration. Additionally, transparent communication with the Central Government regarding the escalating situation and swift initiation of the deportation process is crucial. The proactive stance of the J&K Police is commendable, and sustained efforts are essential. As challenges persist, the government’s resolute actions will determine the successful resolution of this pressing issue.
