Rohit and Virat determined to play 2027 World Cup, says former cricketer Madan Lal

Former India cricketer expects duo to shine in upcoming ODI series against Australia

India, Oct 19 : Former India cricketer Madan Lal, a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, believes that batting stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have a singular goal in mind: to feature in the 2027 World Cup.

The much anticipated ODI series opener against Australia at Optus Stadium, Perth, on Sunday marks the return of Rohit and Virat to the 50-over format for the first time since winning the Champions Trophy in Dubai on March 9. Both players had been out of ODIs for several months after participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL), which concluded in June.

While Rohit Sharma recently handed over the India captaincy to Shubman Gill, Madan Lal expects both senior players to channel their experience and skills toward their long-term goal.

“It’s going to be a very good series. Both teams are very strong, and India’s recent record in 50-over cricket is excellent. All big players focus on performance, not captaincy. Rohit has given good results as captain, but now his only motto, like Virat’s, is to play the 2027 World Cup. I hope they perform well, and their fitness is good,” Madan Lal told ANI.

India has not played an ODI since the Champions Trophy final and recently completed a 2-0 Test series win against the West Indies. Concerns about adapting back to the 50-over format were dismissed by Madan Lal, who emphasized the adaptability of India’s experienced squad.

“Big players adapt quickly to conditions. They know how to manage 50-over cricket, along with Tests and T20s. India’s international team adapts fast, so there’s nothing to worry about in adjusting to the 50-over format,” he added.

The three-match ODI series against Australia is expected to be a thrilling contest, with fans eager to see whether Rohit and Virat can make a strong statement on the road to the 2027 World Cup.
