Rupee Faces Pressure From Higher Oil Prices and US Rate Expectations

RBI support helps cushion the currency as Brent crude approaches $97 a barrel amid Middle East tensions

MUMBAI, Sept 7: The Indian rupee is expected to remain under pressure from elevated crude oil prices and growing expectations of a US Federal Reserve rate hike, although continued intervention by the Reserve Bank of India is helping limit volatility.

The rupee was expected to open around 94.46–94.50 against the US dollar on Monday, following a previous close of 94.4850. The currency had gained nearly 1 per cent during the previous week, offering some relief to investors.

Brent crude prices have climbed to around $97 a barrel as tensions in the Middle East raise concerns about energy supplies. Higher oil prices are particularly significant for India because the country depends heavily on imported crude to meet its energy requirements.

A sustained increase in energy costs could put pressure on India’s import bill and create additional challenges for inflation and the external balance.

The currency is also being influenced by developments in the US economy. Stronger-than-expected US employment data has increased expectations that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates at its September 15–16 meeting.

The US added 162,000 jobs in the latest employment report, exceeding market expectations and strengthening the case for tighter monetary policy. However, investors are awaiting upcoming inflation data before drawing firm conclusions about the Fed’s next move.

The RBI’s intervention in the foreign exchange market has provided support to the rupee and helped prevent sharper movements amid global uncertainty.

Analysts expect currency movements in the coming sessions to remain closely linked to crude prices, US monetary policy, foreign investment flows and developments in the Middle East.

The rupee’s resilience will therefore remain an important indicator for businesses and investors as India navigates a challenging global economic environment.
