Russia Intensifies Drone Assault on Ukraine Ahead of Peace Talks
Massive overnight drone strikes across Ukrainian cities raise fears of a wider escalation as diplomatic negotiations remain uncertain.
KYIV, May 11: The conflict between Russia and Ukraine entered a dangerous new phase after Moscow launched one of its largest drone offensives of 2026, targeting critical infrastructure and residential areas across several Ukrainian cities. The attacks came just days before expected diplomatic discussions involving European mediators, increasing concerns over the future of peace efforts in Eastern Europe.
Ukrainian officials stated that more than 120 drones and missiles were launched overnight, striking energy installations, railway networks, and military positions. Explosions were reported in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, and Dnipro, while emergency services worked through the night to rescue civilians trapped under damaged buildings.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Moscow of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure to weaken morale ahead of possible negotiations. He urged Western allies to accelerate military support, especially air defence systems capable of intercepting long-range drones.
Meanwhile, the Russian Defence Ministry claimed the strikes were aimed at military-industrial facilities linked to Ukrainian defence production. Russian authorities insisted the attacks were retaliatory actions following alleged Ukrainian drone operations near border regions inside Russia.
The renewed escalation has triggered concern across Europe. Leaders from European Union member states warned that continued violence could destabilise regional security and worsen the humanitarian crisis already affecting millions of displaced Ukrainians.
Analysts believe both sides are attempting to strengthen their positions before entering any form of negotiation. Military experts suggest Russia is trying to pressure Ukraine into concessions, while Kyiv is determined to demonstrate resilience and maintain international backing.
The conflict has also impacted global energy markets, with oil and natural gas prices witnessing fluctuations amid fears of supply disruptions. International humanitarian organisations have called for immediate ceasefire measures to protect civilians caught in the crossfire.
As the war enters another uncertain chapter, hopes for peace remain fragile. The coming weeks are expected to determine whether diplomacy can still prevail or whether the region will witness even more destructive confrontations.
