Russia Strikes with 29 Missiles, 400 Drones Ahead of Peace Talks Zelenskyy Questions Moscow’s Intent

Zelenskyy Highlights 29 Missiles, 400 Drones Fired as Diplomatic Efforts Begin

KYIV, Feb 17: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday reported a large-scale Russian missile and drone attack across Ukraine, hours before the start of trilateral peace talks in Geneva. The strikes injured nine people, including children, and caused significant damage to residential buildings, energy infrastructure, and transport facilities.

In a video message posted on X, Zelenskyy said Russia fired 29 missiles and nearly 400 drones in what he called a deliberate escalation, even as diplomatic discussions involving the United States were underway to explore pathways toward ending the war that began in February 2022. Ukraine’s air defence systems successfully intercepted 25 of the 29 missiles, Zelenskyy noted.

The port city of Odesa was particularly affected, with tens of thousands of residents left without heat or water. At least 10 residential buildings and sections of railway infrastructure were damaged. Emergency services were immediately deployed to assist affected areas.

Zelenskyy criticized the timing of the attack, which coincided with the opening of new Geneva negotiations, describing it as a clear signal of Moscow’s intentions. He urged the Ukrainian delegation to raise the issue with US counterparts, particularly given Washington’s proposal that both sides refrain from attacks during talks.

“The team must raise the issue of these strikes with the United States. Ukraine is ready for peace but will defend its independence,” Zelenskyy said. He also questioned whether Russia would face consequences for its actions, calling for stronger sanctions and sustained international support for Ukraine’s military and air defence capabilities.

The Geneva discussions form part of ongoing US-mediated efforts to negotiate a settlement to the conflict. Despite these diplomatic initiatives, continued fighting and aerial attacks across Ukraine underscore the challenges in achieving a lasting ceasefire.

Zelenskyy reaffirmed Ukraine’s willingness to pursue a “just agreement” but emphasized that accountability for Russian aggression and sustained international pressure are crucial for a genuine and lasting peace.
