Sajad Lone accuses NC of sabotaging Waqf Act debate in a ‘fixed match’ with BJP; questions party’s dual face

Jammu, April 9: Peoples Conference MLA Sajad Lone launched a scathing attack on the National Conference (NC), accusing the party of deliberately sabotaging any meaningful discussion on the controversial Waqf Amendment Act in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. Terming the move a “fixed match” with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Lone said the NC had betrayed the people of the Union Territory, especially its Muslim majority population.

Speaking at a press conference, Lone strongly condemned the way the Assembly failed to reflect the sentiments of Jammu and Kashmir’s people against what he termed an imposed and undemocratic Act. “This is the only Muslim-majority region in the country. Yet, the Assembly did not even register a whisper of opposition to this Act. That silence was not accidental—it was engineered. NC sabotaged any scope for discussion, comment, or even public rejection of the Act,” he said.

Lone highlighted the inconsistency in NC’s conduct, suggesting that the party played both sides of the political fence. “The Speaker who denied permission for the adjournment motion belonged to NC. The same party brought in the motion. And those who chose to go for a picnic in the Tulip Garden instead of raising their voices in the Assembly—they were NC too. Which version of the NC should people trust?” he questioned, ridiculing the internal contradictions of the party.

He claimed the move was part of a broader NC-BJP arrangement where political posturing was only for public consumption, but actual cooperation happened behind closed doors. Lone warned that such collusion undermines the democratic values and the genuine grievances of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, especially those whose religious institutions and community lands are affected by the amended Waqf provisions.

Calling for accountability and transparency, Lone demanded that parties come clean on their positions and stop misleading the public with dual narratives. “We need to ask tough questions—who does the NC really represent and whose agenda are they facilitating?” he asked.
