Former Barcelona Midfielder and Spain Star Bids Farewell After Nearly Two Decades of Football Excellence
Miami: Former Spain and Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets has announced that he will retire at the end of the current Major League Soccer (MLS) season, with the playoffs marking the final matches of his illustrious career, Inter Miami confirmed.
Since joining Inter Miami CF in 2023 from FC Barcelona, Busquets has played a key role in the club’s growth, contributing leadership, experience, and midfield mastery. His presence helped the team secure both the Supporters’ Shield and the Leagues Cup.
“I feel like the time has come to say goodbye to my career as a professional footballer. It’s been almost 20 years of enjoying this incredible story I always dreamed of,” Busquets said in a farewell video on Instagram. “A heartfelt thank you to everyone, and to football, for everything. You will always be a part of this beautiful story,” he added.
Busquets’ extraordinary career began at Barcelona, where he spent 18 seasons after joining the club in 2005. Rising through the youth ranks and later Barcelona B under Pep Guardiola, he debuted for the first team in 2008 against Racing Santander. Over 718 appearances for the Catalan club, Busquets won 31 trophies, including 8 La Liga titles, 7 Copa del Reys, 3 Champions Leagues, and 3 Club World Cups, establishing himself as one of football’s greatest midfielders.
For Spain, Busquets earned 143 caps, anchoring the midfield during the nation’s golden era that included victories at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and Euro 2012.
Inter Miami now looks forward to Busquets’ contributions in the final stretch of the season, celebrating the closing chapter of a career marked by skill, leadership, and unmatched consistency.
