London, July 20 : India captain Shubman Gill has dismissed growing speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma’s retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs), stating that the veteran opener has not informed teammates of any plans to step away from the format. Gill’s comments came after India suffered a 27-run defeat to England in the third and final ODI at Lord’s, handing the hosts a 2-1 series victory.

The match sparked widespread discussion over Rohit’s international future after reports suggested the Lord’s fixture could mark his final ODI appearance. However, Gill made it clear that no such conversation has taken place within the Indian dressing room.

Gill Denies Retirement Discussions

Addressing reporters after the match, Gill said the rumours were driven by media speculation rather than any communication from Rohit himself.

“He’s not told us anything. I think it’s all out in the media, but there’s not been any discussion like that in the team,” Gill said when asked whether the Lord’s ODI was Rohit Sharma’s farewell match.

Gill’s statement effectively put to rest immediate speculation, indicating that the senior batter has neither announced nor hinted at retirement to teammates or the team management.

“During the powerplay, we discussed whether to attack immediately, but we knew it wasn’t easy against the new ball. Once he settled, the way he accelerated after reaching the 60s and 70s was exceptional. It was a pleasure to watch.”

Earlier, England produced a batting masterclass after winning the toss, piling up 387/3 in 50 overs, the highest ODI total ever recorded at Lord’s.

Opening batter Ben Duckett led the charge with a brilliant 141, while Jacob Bethell played a career-defining innings of 91. Experienced batter Joe Root remained unbeaten on 74, and captain Jos Buttler added a quick-fire 41 not out, ensuring England finished with a massive total.

The Indian bowlers struggled to contain the aggressive English batting lineup, particularly during the middle overs when Duckett and Bethell dominated the attack.

India Collapse After Strong Position

India appeared well placed to complete the chase after Rohit and Gill’s impressive partnership. Following Gill’s dismissal, Virat Kohli joined Rohit and the duo added another 113 runs, keeping the required run rate under control.

Kohli scored a composed 74, while Rohit continued to dictate terms before eventually departing after his memorable century.

At one stage, India looked firmly in contention at 304/2, needing less than 90 runs with plenty of batting remaining. However, the innings unravelled dramatically as England staged a remarkable comeback.

Left-arm all-rounder Sam Curran emerged as the match-winner, claiming four crucial wickets to derail India’s chase. England’s disciplined death bowling and sharp fielding triggered a collapse that saw India lose their remaining wickets in quick succession.
