Shubman Gill Frustrated by Rohit Sharma’s Struggles, Loses Wicket: “He Was Looking Way Good”

Rohit Sharma’s agonising start adds pressure at the other end, contributing to India captain Gill’s early dismissal in Adelaide.

India, Oct 23 : In India’s second ODI against Australia at the Adelaide Oval, Shubman Gill’s frustration boiled over following Rohit Sharma’s agonisingly slow start. Rohit had scored just 8 runs off 28 balls, with more than half of them being plays and misses or deliveries left alone the slowest start for him in his first 20 balls since the 2019 ODI World Cup. Despite the struggle, Rohit remained determined to protect his wicket, even diving to avoid a near mix-up with Gill in the third over.

However, his cautious approach put additional pressure on Gill, who was forced to take the aggressor’s role to keep India’s innings moving. In the first ball of the seventh over, Gill attempted a scoop off Xavier Bartlett but failed to get sufficient elevation, resulting in a sharp catch to mid off by Australia captain Mitchell Marsh. Gill was dismissed for 10, marking his second consecutive low score as India’s ODI captain, following a 10 run dismissal off Josh Hazlewood in Perth.

“He was looking far better than Rohit Sharma,” remarked former India opener Abhinav Mukund during commentary, highlighting Gill’s frustration at the other end.

The same over turned disastrous for India as Bartlett then dismissed Virat Kohli for a four ball duck, marking the first time in his career that Kohli was out for consecutive ducks in international cricket.

India’s innings later steadied thanks to a partnership between Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer. Rohit scored 73, and Iyer contributed 61, but both were eventually dismissed while attempting to accelerate the run rate Rohit pulled a Mitchell Starc delivery onto a fielder, while Iyer dragged an Adam Zampa ball onto his stumps.
