Slum Rehabilitation Scheme Gets New Eligibility Deadline of Jan 1, 2025

Decision expected to benefit nearly 20 lakh residents, with 4–5 lakh families set to receive permanent homes equipped with civic amenities.

New Delhi, June 24: The Delhi Government has approved a major expansion of its housing rehabilitation programme by extending eligibility to families residing in informal settlements established up to January 1, 2025. The move is expected to benefit around 20 lakh residents and facilitate permanent housing for an estimated 4–5 lakh families across the national capital.

The decision was taken during the 36th meeting of the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. The meeting was attended by Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood, Chief Secretary Rajiv Verma and other senior officials.

Under the revised framework, eligible beneficiaries will be allotted multi-storey housing units equipped with essential civic facilities. The government said efforts would be made to rehabilitate families within or close to their existing localities to minimise disruption to livelihoods and community ties.

Officials said the revised eligibility date removes a significant barrier that had previously excluded many residents from rehabilitation schemes. The decision also broadens the scope of the Delhi Slum and JJ Cluster Rehabilitation and Relocation Policy, 2026.

Addressing the development, the Chief Minister said the initiative would provide long-term housing security and improve living standards for thousands of families currently residing in JJ clusters. She noted that the programme aligns with the government’s commitment to providing permanent housing solutions for urban poor households.

Planned rehabilitation colonies will include schools, anganwadi centres, healthcare facilities, playgrounds and other community infrastructure aimed at enhancing residents’ quality of life.

The government is also examining provisions for cases involving family expansion, where members of the same household occupy separate units within a structure. Such families may be considered for rehabilitation benefits under specified conditions and subject to additional charges.

According to officials, the programme will be implemented in mission mode through coordinated efforts between the Centre and the Delhi Government. The initiative is expected to bring a large section of slum residents into the formal housing network while improving access to civic services and planned urban infrastructure.
