Sonam Wangchuk’s Health Raises Concern: Delhi HC to Hear PIL Seeking Urgent Intervention
Court schedules urgent hearing after plea raises concerns over activist’s declining health during Jantar Mantar protest
New Delhi, July 15: The Delhi High Court has agreed to hear on Thursday a public interest litigation (PIL) concerning the deteriorating health condition of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite fast at Jantar Mantar in the national capital.
The plea was filed amid growing concerns over Wangchuk’s health as he continues his hunger strike in support of the demands raised during the ongoing protest organised by the Cockroach Janta Party. The demonstrators have been demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, alleging irregularities in the conduct of the NEET examination.
Wangchuk joined the protest on June 28 and has remained on an indefinite fast since then. His prolonged fast has triggered concerns among supporters and activists, with the PIL urging authorities to take immediate steps regarding his health condition.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia on Wednesday decided to postpone the hearing after no representative appeared on behalf of the concerned authorities. The delay came amid the work abstention announced by the Delhi High Court Bar Association.
Considering the urgency of the matter, the bench directed that the petition be listed for hearing on Thursday.
The court also instructed that a copy of its order be provided to the concerned Additional Solicitor General and the counsel representing the Delhi government to ensure their presence during the proceedings.
Plea Seeks Government Intervention
Petitioner Rakesh Kumar Saini highlighted concerns over Wangchuk’s health, describing the situation as alarming and stating that a citizen was risking his life through a prolonged fast in public view.
In the petition, Saini requested the court to direct government authorities to intervene, engage in discussions with Wangchuk, and take necessary measures to safeguard his health.
The plea also sought directions for medical intervention, including permission to provide force-feeding if required to prevent any serious health complications.
The court’s hearing on Thursday is expected to focus on the immediate steps needed to address the activist’s health concerns while also considering the broader issues raised by the protesters. The matter has drawn attention as Wangchuk’s fast enters its fourth week, increasing pressure on authorities to respond to the demands of the demonstrators.
