Sonia Gandhi Claims BJP’s Primary Aim Is to Erase Nehru’s Legacy
Congress leader warns of systematic efforts to distort and defame India’s first Prime Minister and undermine the foundations of the nation.
NEW DELHI, Dec 06 : Congress leader Sonia Gandhi on Friday alleged that the primary objective of the BJP is to erase Jawaharlal Nehru and dismantle the social, political, and economic foundations upon which India was built.
Addressing the ongoing debate over Nehru’s legacy, Gandhi said the forces driving this campaign “belong to an ideology that had no role in India’s freedom struggle or in framing the Constitution.” She accused this ideology of fostering an environment of hate, reminiscent of the forces behind Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination, and of continuing to glorify his assassins.
“It is an ideology with a bigoted and viciously communal outlook. Its concept of nationhood is rooted in stoking prejudices of all kinds,” she said.
Gandhi added that while critical analysis of Nehru’s life and work is natural, there has been a growing trend to strip him of historical context and evaluate him without acknowledging the challenges he faced.
“While we welcome ongoing analysis of his contributions, what is unacceptable is the systematic effort to denigrate, distort, and defame him. The sole objective is not only to diminish him as a personality but also to destroy his multi-faceted legacy in a crude and self-serving attempt to rewrite history,” she said.
