Sophie Kinsella Passes Away at 55 Beloved ‘Shopaholic’ Author Remembered Worldwide

Writer of the iconic Becky Bloomwood series passes away peacefully, leaving behind a literary legacy that delighted millions worldwide.

India, Dec 11 : The world of light-hearted fiction mourns the loss of Sophie Kinsella, the beloved author behind the bestselling ‘Shopaholic’ series, who passed away at the age of 55. The news was shared by her family on her official Instagram account on Wednesday.

Her family described her final days as peaceful and surrounded by her passions: “She died peacefully, with her final days filled with her true loves: family and music and warmth and Christmas and joy.” They remembered her as a woman full of radiance, love of life, and gratitude for her readers, who faced illness with courage and grace.

Sophie Kinsella’s contribution to modern romantic comedy fiction is immense. With more than 50 million copies sold across 60 countries, she became a household name through her Becky Bloomwood adventures. The first two books of the series were adapted into the 2009 Hollywood film ‘Confessions of a Shopaholic’, starring Isla Fisher. Her novel ‘Can You Keep a Secret?’ was also adapted into a film in 2019.

Kinsella began her career early, publishing her first book, ‘The Tennis Party’, at 24 under her real name, Madeleine Sophie Wickham, while working as a financial journalist. Over the years, she authored six novels as Madeleine Wickham and 18 more under the pen name Sophie Kinsella. Her final work, ‘What Does It Feel Like?’, released in October 2024, offered a personal reflection on her cancer diagnosis.

She leaves behind her husband, Henry Wickham, and their five children, along with a literary legacy that continues to bring joy to readers around the world.
