Sports Minister Announces June 15 Deadline for Chargesheet in Sexual Harassment Case Against Outgoing WFI Chief
07-06-2023 : In a significant development, Sports Minister Anurag Thakur announced on Wednesday that a chargesheet regarding the allegations of sexual harassment against the outgoing chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), Brijbhushan Sharan Singh, will be submitted by June 15. Thakur made this statement during a press conference following an extensive meeting with the protesting wrestlers. Additionally, Thakur provided assurance that the elections for the WFI will take place by June 30. The government has acceded to the wrestlers’ demands and agreed to establish an internal complaints committee within the WFI, which will be led by a woman.
Among the other demands put forth by the wrestlers were the withdrawal of cases against various academies and athletes, as well as the exclusion of Singh and his associates from the election process. Thakur confirmed that all these issues have been resolved through consensus between the concerned parties.
In response to the wrestlers’ call for Singh’s arrest, Thakur affirmed that the investigation into the allegations will be promptly concluded, and a chargesheet will be filed within the given deadline of June 15.
This meeting between the government and the protesting wrestlers marked the second such interaction within a span of five days. Previously, the wrestlers had met with Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday evening to convey their demands and concerns.
