Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Urges Amit Shah to Release Jammu & Kashmir Prisoners Held Without Trial
Srinagar, Aug 3 : Member of Parliament from Srinagar, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, has called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah to release prisoners from Jammu and Kashmir who have been held without trial.
MP Ruhullah made this appeal during a meeting with the Home Minister on Friday evening.
“Yesterday evening, I met the @HMOIndia and urged him to release the hundreds of prisoners from J&K who have been detained without trial for years. Additionally, I requested the transfer of those who are under trial and have not yet been convicted, to jails within Jammu and Kashmir,” Ruhullah stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Ruhullah also shared the letter he submitted to the Home Minister. The letter outlines his concerns and demands as the representative of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
“As the representative of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, I bring to your attention that several individuals from different regions of the valley are incarcerated. Many of them are convicted, under trial, or held without trial in various parts of the country,” the letter said.
The letter emphasized the plight of young individuals held without trial, noting, “Many prisoners held without trial are young individuals, and it is unjust for the government to detain them during a crucial period of their lives, which is important for career and nation-building. Their release is imperative, and I urge the government to release these prisoners without trial at the earliest.”
Ruhullah also highlighted the unique weather conditions in Kashmir and the humanitarian need to transfer prisoners to the region. “The weather conditions in the Kashmir province differ significantly from the rest of the nation. Convicted and undertrial prisoners should be transferred to the valley on humanitarian grounds. Additionally, it is physically and financially challenging for the relatives of these prisoners to visit them in different parts of the country,” the letter added.
Since his election as MP, Ruhullah has committed to addressing the issue of prisoners and has vowed to advocate for their release.
