Kathmandu, Feb 7: Sunil Thapa, the legendary actor known for his unforgettable portrayal of Ratey Kaila in the Nepali classic Chino and as Mary Kom’s coach in the Bollywood biopic, passed away at the age of 68 on Friday morning. He died at Norvic Hospital, Thapathali, after his health suddenly deteriorated, leaving a void in Nepali cinema and beyond.
From Bollywood Beginnings to Nepali Stardom
Thapa started his acting journey in Bollywood, debuting in Ek Duje Ke Liye (1981) alongside Kamal Haasan. He went on to appear in Aaj Ki Awaaz (1982), Manav Hatya (1986), and several other Hindi films throughout the 1980s and 1990s, gradually establishing himself as a dependable character actor.
The Role That Defined a Generation
In 1989, Thapa’s role as Ratey Kaila in Chino became iconic, redefining villainy in Nepali cinema. Over his career, he appeared in more than 300 Nepali films, including notable works such as Deuki, Prabhisha, Thuldai, Aago, Yo Maya Ko Sagar, Jetho Kancho, and Basanta Ritu. Beyond Nepali films, Thapa’s versatility took him to Tamil, Bhojpuri, and Telugu cinema. Indian audiences fondly remember him as M.
