Sunjay Kapur Estate Dispute: Mother Rani Kapur Moves Delhi HC, Accuses Priya of Sona Group Fraud

Widow of industrialist Surinder Kapur accuses daughter-in-law of creating fraudulent trust to seize family fortune

New Delhi, Jan 21: The luxurious corridors of the Sona Group empire are now echoing with courtroom drama as Rani Kapur, widow of late industrialist Dr Surinder Kapur and mother of the late Sunjay Kapur, has moved the Delhi High Court accusing her daughter in law, Priya Kapur, of orchestrating a fraudulent scheme to seize control of the family assets.

Rani Kapur, now an octogenarian, claims that Priya, along with other family members, created a bogus entity called the “RK Family Trust” in October 2017 to divert the estate unlawfully. The widow alleges the trust is illegal, forged, and designed to exclude her entirely, unlike her earlier legitimate trusts the Dr SK Family Trust and MK Family Trust established in 2016, where she remained the principal beneficiary.

“My life, my legacy, stolen,” Rani Kapur reportedly told her legal team. She has demanded the court nullify the RK Family Trust, restore her assets, enforce a full accounting of all transactions since 2017, and restrain the defendants from exercising control over her companies, bank accounts, or digital signatures.

According to the lawsuit, the late Dr Surinder Kapur had executed his will in February 2013, leaving the entire movable and immovable property of the Sona Group exclusively to Rani Kapur. The will was probated in January 2016 with no objections from any of their children. However, after Rani suffered a stroke in September 2017, the suit claims Priya Kapur took advantage of her vulnerability to divert assets into the new trust.

The allegations include forged signatures and stamps on the RK Family Trust deed, exclusion of Rani Kapur from any benefits, and Priya Kapur securing key managerial and board positions in Sona Group companies shortly after Sunjay Kapur’s death in June 2025. The suit also claims deliberate efforts to cut Rani Kapur off from company communications, including creation of a fictitious email address in her name to validate trust actions without her knowledge.

Rani Kapur’s legal team has asked the Delhi High Court for full restoration of assets, annulment of fraudulent trust actions, and injunctions preventing Priya and other defendants from exercising any authority over her estate.

The case has now brought the decades old Sona Group legacy into the spotlight, raising questions of inheritance, alleged family conspiracies, and protection of senior citizens’ rights in high-value estates.
