Supreme Court Allows Sale and Use of Green Crackers in Delhi-NCR This Diwali

Supreme Court permits eco-friendly fireworks from October 18-21 under strict monitoring

New Delhi, Oct 15: The Supreme Court on Wednesday permitted the sale and bursting of green crackers in Delhi-NCR for Diwali, easing restrictions on eco-friendly fireworks. The decision followed a joint request by the Centre and Delhi government.

A bench comprising Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran allowed the temporary use of green firecrackers from October 18 to 21, emphasizing a balanced approach that supports celebrations without compromising the environment.

While reading the order, the Chief Justice noted that smuggled crackers cause more harm than certified green crackers, highlighting the need for moderation. The court also directed the Central Pollution Control Board and NCR state pollution boards to monitor pollution levels during the festival and submit reports.

The order mandates regular checks on cracker manufacturers, with QR codes required to be uploaded online. Crackers sourced from outside Delhi-NCR will not be permitted for sale, and licenses of violators will be suspended.

The detailed order is awaited. On October 10, the top court had reserved its decision on pleas seeking permission for manufacturing and selling green firecrackers in the region. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had urged the court to allow green crackers for festivals like Diwali, Guru Purab, and Christmas without time restrictions.
