Supreme Court Asks CBSE to Consider Delaying ThreeLanguage Policy for Class 6

The court has urged the board to consider postponing implementation of the policy, citing concerns over infrastructure and the availability of teachers.

New Delhi, Aug. 21: The Supreme Court has asked the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to consider postponing the implementation of the three language policy for Class 6 students until the next academic year.

The suggestion came during a hearing on Thursday, with the court raising concerns about whether schools have adequate infrastructure and teaching staff to introduce the policy effectively.

Under the proposed framework, students would be required to study three languages, including two Indian languages in addition to a third language. The court also sought greater clarity on the position of English within the language-learning framework.

The Chief Justice of India emphasised that schools should have sufficient resources and teachers before implementing major curricular changes. The court indicated that a delay could provide institutions additional time to make the necessary arrangements.

The issue comes amid broader changes in school education following the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education.

The proposed three-language approach has generated considerable discussion over how schools can implement it without placing an additional burden on students, teachers and educational institutions.

The CBSE is expected to consider the court’s observations while assessing the timeline for introducing the policy for Class 6 learners.
