Supreme Court Calls for Faster Disposal of Pending Criminal Cases

Top court stresses urgent judicial reforms and improved infrastructure to reduce mounting case backlog across the country.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday emphasised the need for speedy disposal of criminal cases and called for coordinated efforts to address the growing backlog in courts across India.

During a hearing related to judicial delays, the bench observed that prolonged trials affect both victims and accused persons, undermining public confidence in the justice delivery system.

The court directed state governments and high courts to review infrastructure gaps, judicial vacancies and procedural bottlenecks that contribute to delays in criminal proceedings.

According to official data discussed during the hearing, lakhs of cases remain pending in subordinate courts across multiple states. Legal experts noted that shortage of judges, inadequate court infrastructure and delays in investigations are among the key reasons for the increasing backlog.

The bench also highlighted the importance of digital reforms, including virtual hearings and e-filing systems, in improving judicial efficiency.

Senior advocates appearing in the matter suggested the creation of special fast track courts for serious criminal offences and greater coordination between investigative agencies and prosecutors.

The Supreme Court stated that timely justice is essential for maintaining the credibility of democratic institutions and protecting constitutional rights.

Judicial reforms remain a major issue in India’s legal system, with several committees and commissions over the years recommending structural changes to improve efficiency and reduce delays.
