Supreme Court Pushes States To Upgrade Intensive Care Facilities Across India
Apex court seeks practical action plans from states to improve ICU standards and emergency healthcare delivery
New Delhi, Apr 29: The Supreme Court has directed all states and Union Territories to prepare practical action plans for implementing minimum standards in intensive care units across the country. The move is aimed at strengthening critical healthcare infrastructure and ensuring better emergency treatment facilities in both government and private hospitals.
A bench of the apex court observed that healthcare systems require urgent modernization, particularly in district-level hospitals where shortages of trained staff and critical equipment continue to affect patient care. The court was informed that national guidelines for intensive care services have already been prepared after consultations with medical experts and health institutions.
The guidelines cover infrastructure requirements, staffing patterns, emergency protocols, infection control systems, and advanced monitoring equipment. The court stressed that implementation should not remain limited to metropolitan hospitals and must extend to smaller towns and rural areas.
Health experts welcomed the intervention, stating that the COVID-19 pandemic exposed serious gaps in India’s intensive care systems. Many hospitals continue to face shortages of ventilators, trained nurses, and specialist doctors.
The Centre informed the court that states are being encouraged to modernize healthcare facilities through dedicated financial support and digital health initiatives. Officials also said technology based patient monitoring systems are being introduced in several hospitals.
Medical associations said the court’s push could help create more uniform healthcare standards nationwide. Public health experts believe stronger ICUs will improve survival rates in cases involving trauma, cardiac emergencies, infectious diseases, and surgical complications.
Healthcare reforms are expected to remain a key policy priority as India expands medical infrastructure to meet the demands of a growing population and rising healthcare awareness.
