Supreme Court questions BCCI’s exemption from National Sports Governance Act
The court seeks clarity on why cricket's governing body and state associations should remain outside the proposed sports governance framework.
New Delhi, Sep 09 : The Supreme Court on Tuesday questioned why the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and its affiliated state associations should not come under the National Sports Governance Act, 2025.
The court’s observations came during proceedings concerning the regulation and administration of cricket in India. It noted that the judiciary has dealt with cricket-related disputes for more than a decade and has previously played a role in bringing reforms to the sport’s administration.
The bench sought an explanation on the basis for keeping the BCCI and state cricket bodies outside the proposed regulatory framework applicable to other sporting organisations.
The development could have significant implications for the governance of Indian cricket, particularly on issues involving transparency, accountability and administrative standards.
The BCCI, one of the world’s most influential cricket bodies, has historically operated as an autonomous sporting organisation. Any move to bring it and its affiliated associations under a broader statutory framework could alter the way cricket administration is conducted across the country.
The court’s intervention comes at a time when sports governance and institutional accountability remain major areas of discussion in Indian sport.
