Supreme Court Rejects PIL Demanding CBI Probe, Nationwide Review in Cough Syrup Deaths
CJI BR Gavai led bench rejects plea citing existing state mechanisms, petitioner’s repeated filings
New Delhi, Oct 10 : The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe and a nationwide review of drug safety mechanisms following the deaths of children in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan allegedly caused by toxic cough syrups.
The bench, headed by Chief Justice B R Gavai and comprising Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and K Vinod Chandran, dismissed the plea filed by lawyer Vishal Tiwari. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta opposed the petition, noting that states such as Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh are already taking serious action and have proper enforcement mechanisms in place.
The bench also pointed out that the petitioner had filed multiple similar pleas in the Supreme Court previously, prompting the court to dismiss the current petition. “Dismissed,” the Chief Justice declared.
