Surge in Dengue Cases in Jammu Division: Health Authorities Take Urgent Measures, Additional Beds Ordered for District Hospitals

06-08-2023 : With dengue cases on the rise across the Jammu division, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has sprung into action, closely monitoring the situation and issuing directives for additional medical infrastructure. In response to the increasing cases, the administration has ordered the establishment of ten additional beds in each district hospital to accommodate the growing number of patients.

Health department sources have reported a rise in dengue cases, with an average of 3 to 4 cases being reported in hospitals. So far, 25 people have tested positive for dengue, with Jammu district accounting for 16 cases, and cases also being reported in Samba, Kathua, Poonch, and Udhampur districts.

To address the growing demand for medical care, the administration has instructed all ten district hospitals and medical colleges in the division to set up ten beds each for dengue patients. Additionally, city-based government hospitals, including GMC, SMGS, Gandhinagar Hospital, Sarwal Hospital, and Rajiv Gandhi Hospital in Gangyal, have arranged for Dengue NS1 antigen ELISA and Ig tests.

In GMC Jammu, 50 dedicated dengue beds have been set up, and the NICU unit at SMGS hospital will admit children in emergency cases. Platelet facilities will be available in the Component Lab at SMGS and Gandhinagar Hospital. To alleviate the burden on GMC Jammu, district hospital administrations of GMC Kathua, GMC Rajori, GMC Doda, and GMC Udhampur have been directed not to refer general cases to Jammu. Instead, platelet arrangements will be made in the component labs of various GMCs, and transportation of platelets to respective district hospitals will be arranged as needed.

A senior doctor while talking on the issue has highlighted the presence of dengue mosquito larvae in many parts of Jammu city, and residents are being urged to be vigilant and take necessary precautions. The administration remains committed to managing the outbreak effectively and ensuring the well-being of the affected population.
