Tamil Nadu Braces for Heavy Rain on Jan 9–10
Delta and northern coastal districts brace for intense showers frost and fog warnings issued in Nilgiris and Kodaikanal
CHENNAI, Jan 06 : Several districts of Tamil Nadu are likely to experience heavy rainfall on January 9 and 10, particularly across the delta and northern coastal regions, following the formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday.
According to the IMD, an atmospheric circulation over the central southern Bay of Bengal has intensified into a low-pressure area, which is expected to strengthen into a deep low-pressure area within 24 hours, increasing the potential for widespread rainfall over Tamil Nadu and neighbouring regions.
Areas likely to be most affected
January 9: Delta districts including Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, and Ramanathapuram may witness intense rainfall, raising concerns over waterlogging, transport disruptions, and impact on agriculture.
January 10: Heavy rain is forecast to expand to Viluppuram, Cuddalore, along with previously affected delta districts. Coastal and interior regions may experience sustained showers as the system continues to intensify.
Additional weather alerts
Moderate rainfall is expected at isolated coastal locations on Wednesday, ahead of peak rainfall days.
Fog is likely during early mornings on Tuesday and Wednesday across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, potentially affecting road and rail travel.
Frost warnings have been issued for isolated areas in Nilgiris and Kodaikanal, where night and early morning temperatures may drop significantly.
The IMD has urged district administrations, farmers, fishermen, and residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and follow official advisories, as weather conditions are expected to remain dynamic over the next few days.
