Telangana CM Revanth Reddy Agrees to CBI Inquiry on Illegal Mining Row
Opposition protests intensify as 24 BRS MLAs face suspension amid demand for deeper investigation
India, Mar 30 : A Revanth Reddy on Sunday stated that his government is willing to entrust the alleged illegal mining case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), following strong demands from opposition legislators during a chaotic Assembly session.
The disruption unfolded as members of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) pressed for the formation of a legislative committee to examine the allegations. They also called for the resignation of Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy, claiming that a firm associated with his relatives had links to unlawful mining activities.
Responding to the accusations, the Chief Minister clarified that a probe by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) had already been initiated. However, he added that if the opposition lacks confidence in the state agency, the administration is prepared to escalate the matter to a central level investigation. He emphasized that no individual, including relatives of those in power, would be spared if wrongdoing is established.
Dismissing the opposition’s demand for the minister’s resignation, Revanth Reddy countered by accusing the previous BRS government of using Assembly committees for political advantage rather than genuine oversight.
Earlier in the day, proceedings were repeatedly stalled as BRS legislators raised slogans, stormed the well of the House, and disrupted order despite multiple appeals from the Speaker. The situation escalated further, leading to the suspension of 24 BRS MLAs for two days, including senior leaders T Harish Rao and K. T. Rama Rao.
The incident underscores rising political tensions in the state, with the mining controversy becoming a fresh flashpoint between the ruling government and the opposition.
