Tele Manas Excellence: J&K Sets the Bar High

Jammu and Kashmir, a region known for its breathtaking natural beauty, has recently made remarkable strides in the realm of mental health services. This Union Territory, which has faced its fair share of challenges and adversities, has emerged as a pioneer in the National Tele Mental Health Program, commonly referred to as Tele Manas.

J&K’s outstanding achievement in this program, securing the top position in the nation for the highest number of daily calls received, stands as a testament to the resilience of its people and the unwavering dedication of healthcare professionals and administrators who have made this achievement possible. In India, physical health has frequently given precedence over mental health. Their ability to obtain essential services and support has been hampered by the ongoing stigma and disdain for mental health disorders. There is a significant need for mental health interventions given the world’s population of over 1.3 billion people, but there is a disproportionate lack of access to these services. This was the background against which the National Tele Mental Health Programme was designed. Its goal is to offer all Indian states and union territories comprehensive, all-inclusive, round-the-clock tele-mental health services, thereby providing equitable, affordable, accessible, and high-quality mental health care to all people through tele-mental health counseling services. The exceptional achievement of Jammu and Kashmir in the Tele Manas program stands out as an exceptional feat. Since its commencement on November 4, 2022, the J&K program has amassed an impressive 26,477 calls, unveiling a wide array of mental health concerns within the community. The primary motivators for seeking help encompass anxiety (2854 calls), depression (2790 calls), palpitations (2428 calls), reduced interest (1931 calls), stress (1869 calls), and sleep disruptions (1601 calls). This data underlines the diverse range of mental health challenges being addressed through the program.   Furthermore, 799 calls pertained to suicidal ideation or attempts, emphasizing the critical need for mental health services in the region. Calls related to substance use and addiction shed light on the multifaceted nature of mental health issues in J&K. The success of the Tele Manas programme is acknowledged to have been aided by the determination of the Jammu and Kashmiri people, the support of the administration, and the dedication of medical professionals. This accomplishment shows that individuals in the community recognize the significance of mental health to overall well-being, which is more than just a cause for celebration. The Tele Manas program transcends traditional approaches to mental health care delivery. By providing round-the-clock mental health counseling services, it eliminates various barriers that have historically hindered access to mental health care. One of the most significant advantages of Tele Manas is its capacity to overcome geographical challenges. In J&K, characterized by diverse and often remote regions, the program has been instrumental in ensuring that people can seek help without enduring arduous journeys. Moreover, the program addresses the issue of stigma associated with seeking mental health support. Because telecounseling offers anonymity, more people are encouraged to seek help, which helps de-stigmatize mental health services. Acknowledgment serves as a call to action as well as validation.  Jammu and Kashmir’s recognition for its exceptional achievement in the Tele Manas program should serve as an inspiration for the rest of the nation. It highlights the potential within India to transform mental health care and offer support to millions of individuals in need. This recognition should be viewed as an impetus for other states and union territories to prioritize mental health and invest in similar programs. The success of J&K demonstrates that with the right commitment, infrastructure, and human resources, it is possible to make a substantial impact in the field of mental health. The success of J&K has wider ramifications for Indian mental health services. It emphasizes how critical it is that issues related to mental health receive national attention. There are geographical variations in mental health difficulties due to the nation’s large and diversified population.  The need for a customized approach to mental health care that takes into account the particular requirements of each state and union territory is demonstrated by the success of the Tele Manas programme in J&K.  Additionally, the programme emphasizes how technology can be used to provide mental health treatments. Technology may be quite helpful in ensuring that people in need of mental health care in a country the size and population of India. The program’s accomplishments in J&K provide as more evidence of the value of an all-encompassing strategy for mental health treatment. It involves early detection and intervention as well as treating mental health conditions when they emerge. According to data from J&K’s Tele Manas programme, the most prevalent reasons people seek help are anxiety, stress, and mood disorders. This implies that proactive mental health promotion and education are necessary. Furthermore, the inclusion of calls pertaining to substance abuse and addiction highlights the connection between different health conditions. An integrated approach is essential, and mental health issues should not be segregated from larger health programmes. This accomplishment would not have been possible without the community, administrators, and healthcare professionals working together. Bhupinder Kumar and his team’s award serves as a reminder of how important it is to honour and commend people who put up a great effort to enhance mental health care. Leadership and political will are essential elements of any effective healthcare programme. The significance of the community cannot be overstated. The active participation of J&K residents in availing mental health services and pursuing treatment has been pivotal in this accomplishment. It reflects a willingness among individuals to give precedence to their mental health and overall well-being, which is an essential shift required for substantial advancements in mental health service delivery.

In short, Jammu and Kashmir’s unprecedented achievement in the Tele Manas program is a testament to resilience, dedication, and collaboration. This Union Territory has set a remarkable example for the nation, underlining the importance of prioritizing mental health and leveraging technology to make quality care accessible to all. The success of J&K should inspire similar initiatives nationwide and accelerate the transformation of mental health care in India.
