Thailand Stun Hong Kong by Six Runs in Women’s Asia Cup Opener
Naruemol Chaiwai's 43 and Onnicha Kamchomphu's three-wicket haul help Thailand defend 120 in a tense Dubai contest.
DUBAI, Aug 29: Thailand began their Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2026 campaign with a six-run victory over Hong Kong, China in a closely fought opening match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Friday.
Batting first, Thailand posted 120 for nine in their 20 overs, with captain Naruemol Chaiwai anchoring the innings with 43 runs from 31 deliveries. Nannapat Koncharoenkai added 27 as Thailand battled to build a defendable total on a challenging surface.
Hong Kong’s Marina Lamplough was the standout bowler, taking four wickets for just 11 runs. Alison Siu also contributed with three wickets as Thailand were restricted to a modest score.
The chase remained competitive, with Kary Chan and Yasmin Daswani both making 28. Hong Kong reached 114 for seven after their allotted 20 overs but fell short of the target.
Thailand’s bowlers delivered under pressure in the closing overs. Off-spinner Onnicha Kamchomphu claimed three wickets for 27 runs, while Phannita Maya picked up two wickets to prevent Hong Kong from completing the chase.
The result gave Thailand two points at the start of Group A and provided an early boost in a tournament featuring eight teams. The Women’s Asia Cup is being held in Dubai from August 28 to September 13.
Thailand’s disciplined performance with the ball proved decisive after their batters had posted a total that appeared vulnerable. The narrow win sets up their campaign with confidence as the group stage continues.
