TN Assembly Elections: BJP, Congress Face Candidate Selection Challenges
Factional tensions and strategic concerns delay final lists in Tamil Nadu election race
Chennai: With the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections approaching, both the BJP and Congress are facing mounting challenges in finalizing their candidate lists, as internal disagreements and strategic dilemmas slow down decision-making.
The Congress, which had earlier urged the DMK to expedite a seat sharing arrangement, is now dealing with internal factional disputes over ticket distribution. Of the 28 constituencies allocated to the party, around 16 are likely to be retained by sitting legislators. However, the remaining 12 seats have become a battleground for competing groups within the party, intensifying internal friction.
On the other hand, BJP leaders have expressed dissatisfaction over the 27 seats allotted to them by their ally AIADMK. Party workers believe that several of these constituencies may prove challenging in terms of electoral prospects, leading to discontent within the ranks.
Adding to the political buzz, senior BJP leader and former state president K Annamalai, who had reportedly shown reluctance to contest, returned to Chennai from Puducherry for a crucial meeting. He held discussions with the party’s state election in-charge Piyush Goyal, fueling speculation about key decisions regarding candidate selection and campaign strategy.
As both parties grapple with internal pressures, the delay in announcing candidates highlights the complexities shaping the electoral landscape in Tamil Nadu.
