TN Chief Secretary, DGP Shifted, Stalin Raises Strong Objections

Poll panel replaces Chief Secretary and senior police officer ahead of April 23 Assembly election; DMK calls move politically motivated

Tamil Nadu, Apr 09 : Election Commission of India has ordered a major administrative reshuffle in Tamil Nadu just weeks before the April 23 Assembly elections, replacing Chief Secretary N Muruganandam with M Sai Kumar, and shifting senior police officer S Davidson Devasirvatham in favour of Sandeep Mittal.

The decision comes in response to complaints from opposition parties alleging misuse of the state machinery in favour of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government. The poll panel directed immediate implementation of the transfers and instructed that the outgoing officials should not be assigned any election-related responsibilities until the completion of the voting process.

In an official communication, Election Commission secretary Lata Tripathi emphasized the urgency, asking for compliance and joining reports within hours. The Commission clarified that the reshuffle is part of its efforts to ensure free and fair elections.

However, Chief Minister M. K. Stalin strongly criticised the move, accusing the Commission of acting under political influence. Addressing rallies in Tiruvannamalai and Kallakurichi, he questioned the timing of the decision and alleged that it favours opposition alliances.

Stalin also pointed out that Election Commission officials had recently praised the state’s law and order situation, questioning the sudden shift in stance. He further alleged that similar administrative changes, including transfers in Salem district, were intended to benefit leaders like Edappadi K. Palaniswami and the NDA bloc.

Calling the move an attempt to derail his party’s electoral prospects, Stalin asserted that such actions would not impact the outcome, expressing confidence in the DMK’s victory.
