Torrential Rains Lash Kolkata During Durga Puja, Metro Services Disrupted
Heavy overnight downpour causes waterlogging, cripples traffic, and halts metro operations in several city areas
Kolkata : Kolkata witnessed widespread disruption on Tuesday as heavy overnight rains inundated several parts of the city amid Durga Puja festivities. The downpour, which began Monday night and continued for nearly seven hours, led to severe waterlogging, affecting traffic and prompting a suspension of metro services.
Kolkata Metro authorities halted operations between Shahid Khudiram and Maidan stations due to water accumulation between Mahanayak Uttam Kumar and Rabindra Sarobar stations. Truncated services were maintained between Dakshineswar and Maidan stations to ensure passenger safety.
Officials confirmed that water was being actively pumped out, with Metro Railway staff deployed on-site to restore normal operations. Visuals from the city showed knee-deep water submerging railway tracks and local shops, disrupting daily life.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecast heavy rains in Kolkata due to an approaching low-pressure system. The IMD also warned of continued heavy rainfall in the city and nearby areas on September 25, urging residents to exercise caution.
