TPCC Chief Accuses BJP of Polarisation Ahead of Civic Elections

B. Mahesh Kumar Goud also alleges inadequate central funding, urges voters to weigh development before polling.

Hyderabad, Feb 05: Telangana Congress president B. Mahesh Kumar Goud on Wednesday alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was attempting to stir communal sentiments to influence voters ahead of the upcoming municipal elections. He also claimed the Centre had failed to extend adequate financial support and approvals for major state projects.

Speaking at a press conference, Goud urged residents to make informed choices at the ballot box and questioned the BJP’s development record in the state. He said the party should explain what benefits Telangana received from the Union Budget 2026–27, particularly through the efforts of its eight Members of Parliament, including two Union ministers.

Highlighting economic figures, the TPCC chief noted that Telangana contributes about 5.01% to the national GDP and argued the state should have secured roughly Rs 3.76 lakh crore from the Centre. Instead, he claimed, only Rs 1.84 lakh crore had been allocated over the past five years. Referring to tax flows, he added that while Telangana generated approximately Rs 4.32 lakh crore in GST during the same period, the funds returned were lower.

Goud further contended that the Union government’s fiscal approach appeared to favour northern regions, which he said ran counter to the principles of cooperative federalism. He accused the Centre of redirecting tax revenues from Telangana toward other states.

Expressing confidence in the electorate, the Congress leader said the state’s tradition of communal harmony would shape voting behaviour. He pointed to the Jubilee Hills by-election as an example, claiming it reflected public resistance to the BJP’s politics.
