Traders Flag Civic Issues During Yudhvir Sethi’s Visit to Ware House Market

Jammu, April 21: Sh. Yudhvir Sethi, Hon’ble MLA Jammu East, on Tuesday visited the Warehouse and Nehru Market areas and interacted with members of the Traders Federation Warehouse Nehru Market to take stock of ongoing issues being faced by the trading community. During the MLA’s visit, officers of PDD, UEED and JMC were also present.

During the visit, Sh. Deepak Gupta, President of the Traders Federation Ware House, Nehru Market, submitted a detailed memorandum highlighting several pressing concerns affecting daily business operations and the overall functioning of the market.

The Federation raised serious health concerns regarding the spread of mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, especially as over five thousand workers are engaged in the market, many of whom sleep in the open at night. They urged the authorities to undertake regular fogging on a priority basis to safeguard the health of workers and employees.

Highlighting infrastructural deficiencies, the traders pointed out the poor condition of the drainage system in the area. They stated that clogged and damaged drains often lead to waterlogging during the rainy season, resulting in significant losses. The Federation demanded immediate repair, deep cleaning, and proper maintenance of drains, along with installation of dustbins at appropriate locations to ensure cleanliness.

The issue of inadequate manpower for sanitation was also brought to the notice of the MLA. With the market witnessing increased business activity and heavy daily footfall from across Jammu and Kashmir, the shortage of sanitation workers has led to persistent unhygienic conditions. The Federation urged for an increase in sanitation staff to maintain proper cleanliness.
The traders also expressed concern over poor lighting conditions in the market, stating that many street lights are non-functional, leaving the area in darkness. They requested installation of high mast lights and replacement of damaged street lights to improve visibility and safety.

Additionally, the federation highlighted the deteriorating condition of roads in the mandi area. Due to heavy vehicular movement, roads have developed potholes and the blacktopping has worn off, turning them into dusty stretches. They demanded immediate repair and re-blacktopping of roads.

The traders further emphasised the need for an uninterrupted electricity supply during working hours, particularly from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM, to facilitate smooth business operations and timely generation of GST-related e-way bills.

The Traders’ Federation expressed gratitude to the MLA for visiting the market and giving a patient hearing to their concerns. They expressed hope that the issues raised would be addressed at the earliest
