Tribunals Uphold Ban on Two J&K Organisations, Including Mirwaiz Farooq’s Awami Action Committee

Delhi High Court tribunals back Centre’s decision, citing evidence of separatist and unlawful activities in Jammu & Kashmir.

NEW DELHI, Sept 19: Two Delhi High Court tribunals have upheld the Centre’s ban on the Awami Action Committee (AAC), led by Kashmir’s prominent cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, and the Jammu and Kashmir Ittihadul Muslimeen (JKIM), headed by Shia leader Masroor Abbas Ansari.

The tribunals, presided over by Justice Sachin Datta, ruled that the material and evidence presented were sufficient to declare the organisations as unlawful associations under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

“Having independently and objectively assessed the evidence, this Tribunal is of the firm view that there is sufficient cause for declaring the organisations unlawful under Section 3(1) of UAPA,” the identical orders stated.

The Union Home Ministry had banned both groups on March 11, citing their involvement in activities prejudicial to India’s sovereignty, integrity, and security. The ministry accused them of mobilising funds to support secessionist, separatist, and terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir.
