Washington DC: The Trump administration is reportedly evaluating strategies to secure Iran’s nuclear material as tensions escalate in West Asia, according to sources familiar with ongoing discussions.
A report by CBS News indicates that while no final decision has been made, potential plans include deploying forces from the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), an elite US military unit known for handling sensitive counter-proliferation missions. The timing and scope of any such operation remain uncertain.
According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran has accumulated approximately 972 pounds of uranium enriched to 60%, a level close to weapons-grade. Much of this material is believed to be stored deep within nuclear facilities that were previously targeted during US military operations.
Experts caution that any attempt to retrieve the material would be highly complex and risky. IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi noted that handling enriched uranium hexafluoride requires advanced capabilities due to its hazardous nature.
US officials have indicated that securing Iran’s nuclear stockpile remains one of several options under consideration. However, intelligence assessments have previously suggested that Iran is not actively pursuing nuclear weapons, maintaining that its programme is for peaceful purposes.
The developments come amid heightened military activity in the region and ongoing concerns over global security and energy stability. Earlier diplomatic efforts, including talks mediated by Oman, had explored reducing Iran’s enriched uranium levels, but the current conflict has complicated those negotiations.
