Trump Claims Iran Is “Looking at Freedom,” Offers Support to Iranians Amid Protests
US President warns Tehran against violence as protests spread to over 100 cities and internet shutdown continues.
Washington, Jan 11: Amid massive and ongoing protests across Iran, US President Donald Trump on Saturday claimed that the country is moving towards “freedom” and said the United States is ready to help the Iranian people.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said, “Iran is looking at FREEDOM, perhaps like never before. The USA stands ready to help!!!”
The situation in Iran remains tense, with large scale demonstrations reported in more than 100 cities, heightened security measures, and a near-total internet shutdown. What began as protests against rising inflation have gradually evolved into a nationwide movement challenging the Islamic Republic.
Meanwhile, media reports have claimed that Trump has been briefed on possible military options targeting Iran. According to the reports, contingency plans presented to the US President include the option of targeted strikes on select sites in Tehran, particularly non-military infrastructure linked to the regime’s internal security apparatus. The proposed plans are said to be part of a broader assessment of diplomatic, economic and military measures aimed at curbing alleged violence by Iranian authorities.
Trump has also issued a stern warning to Tehran over the treatment of protestors. Last week, he said the United States would respond forcefully if demonstrators were killed. “If they start killing people like they have in the past, we will get involved. We will be hitting them very hard where it hurts not boots on the ground, but hitting them very hard where it hurts,” he said.
Expressing concern for the safety of protestors, Trump said the US is closely monitoring developments in Iran. “I just hope the protestors in Iran are going to be safe because it is a very dangerous place right now. I tell the Iranian leaders you better not start shooting because we’ll start shooting too,” he warned.
