Trump Claims Iran War Over, Expects Peace Deal by Weekend

US President claims conflict has ended as Tehran reportedly agrees to forgo nuclear weapons; JD Vance may attend Europe signing ceremony.

WASHINGTON, Jun 12: US President Donald Trump on Thursday said a peace agreement with Iran is close to completion and could be formally signed in Europe this weekend, signalling a potential breakthrough after weeks of heightened tensions and military threats.

Speaking at the White House, Trump said Vice President J D Vance is expected to attend the signing ceremony if the agreement is finalised in the coming days. He added that he had held consultations with leaders from Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait and Pakistan as negotiations gathered momentum.

Describing the proposed accord as a detailed memorandum of understanding, Trump said the agreement would pave the way for stability in the region and lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy corridor.

Later, during a tele rally supporting Georgia Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones’ gubernatorial campaign, Trump declared that the conflict with Iran had effectively come to an end.

He asserted that Tehran had agreed not to pursue nuclear weapons under any circumstances, calling it the central objective of Washington’s efforts throughout the standoff.

Trump maintained that sustained pressure had persuaded Iran to move towards an agreement, claiming the Iranian leadership was now eager to conclude the negotiations.

The remarks came just hours after Trump warned of possible military action against Iran and threatened measures targeting Kharg Island, the country’s principal oil export terminal. However, the administration subsequently stepped back from those threats, citing positive developments in diplomatic talks.

The President’s latest comments followed several weeks of statements suggesting that Washington and Tehran were nearing an understanding, although a formal settlement had yet to be reached.
