Trump Repeats Controversial Claim of ‘Fixing’ India-Pakistan Conflict During Mamdani Meet
Reiterates assertion in Oval Office as India maintains it never accepted third-party mediation.
New York/Washington, Nov 22: US President Donald Trump has once again claimed that he “solved” the conflict between India and Pakistan, repeating the assertion during his meeting with New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani at the White House on Friday.
Mamdani flew to Washington for his first official engagement with Trump in the Oval Office. The President described the meeting as “great,” saying he “enjoyed” the interaction.
Standing alongside Mamdani, Trump reiterated his claim that he resolved the May standoff between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. “I did eight peace deals of countries, including India and Pakistan,” he said.
Earlier on Wednesday, Trump had said he threatened to impose 350 per cent tariffs on both nations unless they ended the fighting — a move he claims pushed them toward a ceasefire. He has repeated more than 60 times that he “helped settle” tensions.
India Rejects Claim; Recalls Operation Sindoor
India has repeatedly dismissed suggestions of any outside mediation.
New Delhi launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir after the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians.
India and Pakistan agreed on May 10 to halt hostilities after four days of intense drone and missile exchanges — an understanding India maintains was reached bilaterally, not through US intervention.
Zohran Mamdani’s Historic Win
Mamdani, who won the closely watched New York City mayoral race, is the first South Asian and the first Muslim to be elected mayor of the largest US city.
He defeated Republican Curtis Sliwa and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent and was publicly endorsed by Trump just hours before the polls.
Born in Kampala, Uganda, Mamdani is the son of acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair and scholar Mahmood Mamdani. He moved to New York at age seven and became a naturalised US citizen in 2018.
