Trump Says India Can Rely on Him “100%”, Promises Full Support
US President highlights strengthening India-US ties as officials signal progress on an interim trade agreement.
NEW DELHI, May 25: US President Donald Trump reaffirmed his strong support for India during a live phone interaction at an event hosted by the US Embassy in New Delhi to celebrate America’s 250th Independence Day.
Addressing guests via speakerphone, Trump said India could rely on him completely and described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a close friend. The interaction took place in the presence of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and other dignitaries attending the programme at Bharat Mandapam.
Trump praised the growing partnership between the two countries and said relations between Washington and New Delhi had reached unprecedented levels. He also spoke positively about India’s leadership and economic cooperation between the two nations.
US Ambassador Sergio Gor connected the call during the event, which was attended by nearly 1,500 guests.
Speaking separately at the function, Rubio described India-US relations as a key pillar of the evolving global order, emphasising cooperation in strategic and economic sectors. Jaishankar highlighted expanding collaboration in trade, defence, technology and connectivity between the two democracies.
The event also fuelled expectations of an interim trade agreement between India and the United States, with officials indicating that negotiations were moving forward and a deal could be concluded in the coming weeks.
