Trump Says Iran Wants a Deal, But Rejects Proposed Terms

Tehran denies negotiations as tensions escalate over the Strait of Hormuz and ongoing conflict.

US, Mar 14 : US President Donald Trump has said that Iran is attempting to negotiate an agreement with Washington but insisted that the proposal is “not the kind of deal” he would accept. His remarks come amid escalating tensions between the two countries and conflicting signals about the possibility of diplomatic talks.

Speaking about the ongoing standoff, Trump claimed that Iran had suffered a significant setback and was now seeking negotiations. However, officials in Tehran have strongly rejected the assertion, maintaining that there is currently no scope for dialogue with the United States.

During discussions with leaders of the G7 nations convened by French President Emmanuel Macron, Trump reportedly said Iran was “close to surrendering.” According to reports, he also described recent US actions against Iranian leadership as eliminating a major threat.

Iranian authorities have pushed back against those claims. The country’s leadership has vowed to continue its response, including maintaining restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route through which roughly a quarter of global seaborne oil and gas trade passes. The disruption has contributed to a surge in international energy prices.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi dismissed the idea of an immediate ceasefire, saying any such move would require assurances that future attacks would not occur and that responsibility for recent actions would be acknowledged.

Similarly, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi indicated that the country would continue its resistance as long as necessary, casting doubt on Trump’s prediction that the conflict could end quickly.

The latest exchange of statements highlights the widening gap between Washington and Tehran as geopolitical tensions in the region continue to intensify.
