Trump’s Signature Set to Appear on US Paper Currency in Historic Move
Treasury proposal to mark America’s semiquincentennial raises legal and political concerns
WASHINGTON, Mar 27: The administration of US President Donald Trump has ignited fresh controversy with a proposal to include his signature on American paper currency as part of celebrations marking the country’s 250th anniversary in 2026.
The US Treasury Department announced that upcoming dollar notes will feature Trump’s signature alongside that of the Treasury Secretary, making it the first instance of a sitting president’s name appeaaring on US paper money.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the initiative is intended to commemorate the semiquincentennial milestone, highlighting what he described as a period of economic strength under the current leadership. He noted that the move symbolises growth, financial stability, and the continued global dominance of the US dollar.
According to officials, the proposal forms part of a broader plan to celebrate the anniversary, which may also include commemorative materials bearing Trump’s likeness. US Treasurer Brandon Beach echoed the sentiment, linking the initiative to the administration’s economic narrative and calling it a tribute to what he termed a new era of national prosperity.
However, the plan has triggered legal and political debate. Longstanding US laws discourage the depiction of living individuals on currency, a principle dating back to 1866 to avoid associations with monarchies. Critics argue that introducing a sitting president’s signature could challenge established norms and invite scrutiny.
Historically, the US first introduced paper money for general circulation in 1861, known as “Demand Notes” or “greenbacks,” to support wartime financing during the Civil War.
The currency proposal also coincides with discussions around issuing a special $1 coin featuring Trump’s image, with preliminary designs showing his profile and patriotic imagery.
