Two IAF Pilots Killed as Sukhoi-30 Fighter Jet Crashes in Assam

Debris located in Karbi Anglong after aircraft went down during training mission near Jorhat air base

GUWAHATI, Mar 6: Two Indian Air Force pilots were killed after a Su-30 MKI fighter jet crash in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, the IAF confirmed on Friday.

The aircraft, which had taken off from the Jorhat air base for a training sortie on Thursday evening, went down about 60 km from the base.

In a statement posted on X, the IAF said, “IAF acknowledges the loss of Sqn Ldr Anuj and Flt Lt Purvesh Duragkar, who sustained fatal injuries in the Su-30 crash. All personnel of the IAF express sincere condolences and stand firmly with the bereaved family in this time of grief.”

A defence spokesperson in Guwahati said the wreckage of the aircraft was located early Friday morning. Search and rescue teams from the IAF, assisted by local police, civil administration, and villagers, trekked through difficult terrain and found the debris around 1 am.

Officials said the aircraft had lost contact shortly after takeoff, prompting a search operation in the surrounding region. Further details about the cause of the crash are expected after an investigation.
