UGC Introduces New Academic Credit Framework to Boost Flexible Higher Education

Universities to expand multidisciplinary learning and easier credit transfers under revised higher education reforms.

New Delhi, May 29: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced a revised academic credit framework aimed at making higher education more flexible, multidisciplinary and student centric. The updated guidelines encourage universities and colleges across the country to strengthen the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) system, allowing students to transfer credits seamlessly between recognised institutions.

Officials said the new framework aligns with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 by promoting greater academic mobility and offering students the opportunity to pursue interdisciplinary courses without losing previously earned credits.

Under the revised system, universities have been advised to digitise academic records, simplify the credit transfer process and ensure compatibility with national digital education platforms. Students will be able to accumulate academic credits over time and use them towards completing degree programmes at participating institutions.

The UGC stated that the framework also supports multiple entry and exit options in undergraduate programmes, enabling students to pause their education due to personal or financial reasons and resume their studies later without academic loss.

Vice-chancellors and academic administrators have been asked to establish dedicated credit management cells to assist students with registration, verification and transfer of academic records. Institutions are also expected to conduct awareness programmes explaining the benefits of the revised system.

Education experts believe the initiative will encourage lifelong learning by allowing learners to pursue additional certifications, skill-based courses and online programmes alongside conventional degree education.

The Commission has further recommended increased collaboration between universities, autonomous colleges and online education providers to expand academic opportunities. Such partnerships are expected to improve access to specialised courses that may not be available within individual institutions.

Students from rural and economically weaker backgrounds are expected to benefit significantly from greater academic flexibility, enabling them to balance education with employment or family responsibilities while continuing their degree programmes.

Universities have welcomed the reforms, stating that the updated framework will improve academic innovation and provide institutions with greater flexibility in curriculum design. Faculty members have also been encouraged to develop multidisciplinary courses that combine science, technology, humanities and vocational education.

The UGC has asked institutions to complete necessary technological upgrades and administrative preparations before implementing the revised guidelines during the upcoming academic session. Officials expressed confidence that the new framework will strengthen India’s higher education ecosystem and enhance global academic competitiveness.
