Ujjaini Express Coaches Jump Tracks Near Rishikesh, No Injuries Reported

Train heading to railway yard after arrival at Yog Nagari station meets with minor accident; probe ordered

RISHIKESH, May 19: Three coaches of the Ujjaini Express derailed near the Yog Nagari railway station in Uttarakhand’s Rishikesh late Monday night while the train was being shifted to the railway yard, railway officials said.

No casualties or injuries were reported in the incident as the train was empty at the time of the derailment. Officials said the accident occurred around 9:40 pm near the Khand Gaon area after the train had completed its scheduled journey.

The Ujjaini Express operates between Lakshmibai Nagar in Indore and Yog Nagari railway station in Rishikesh. The train had arrived at the station around 6 pm on Monday and was scheduled to begin its return journey at 6:15 am on Tuesday.

According to railway sources, the incident took place when the rake was being moved from the platform to the railway yard for routine maintenance and parking procedures. During the shunting operation, the locomotive reportedly collided with the buffer stop located at the dead end of the track.

The impact generated heavy pressure on the connected coaches, causing one coach to come off the tracks while another suffered structural damage after buckling in the middle section. In total, three coaches sustained damage in the mishap.

Railway officials confirmed that the derailment did not disrupt regular train services in the region. Operations at Yog Nagari railway station continued normally and no passenger trains were affected.

Station authorities immediately launched restoration work following the accident. Damaged coaches were separated from the train, while cranes and technical teams were deployed to place the derailed coaches back on the tracks.

Yog Nagari railway station manager Surendra Kumar Sharma said railway engineers and recovery teams were working continuously to restore the affected section completely. He added that an inquiry has been ordered to determine the exact cause of the derailment and examine whether any technical or operational lapse led to the incident.

Following news of the derailment, a large number of local residents gathered near the railway tracks. Personnel from the Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) reached the spot to manage the crowd and maintain safety around the accident site.

Officials said a detailed inspection of the train and railway infrastructure will be conducted as part of the investigation. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry report.
