Umar Khalid Bail Denied: Mahua Moitra Backs Activist With Poetic Message

TMC MP expresses solidarity through verse as Supreme Court denies bail in alleged Delhi riots conspiracy case

New Delhi, Jan 07 : Political debates around student activist Umar Khalid continue to intensify after the Supreme Court rejected his bail plea in connection with the alleged larger conspiracy behind the 2020 north east Delhi riots. Adding to the discourse, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra expressed support for Khalid by sharing a short poem on social media platform X titled “You Will Rise, Umar Khalid.”

In the poem, Moitra wrote:
“You may write me down in history with your bitter, twisted lies, you may trod me in the very dirt, but still, like dust, I’ll rise… You may shoot me with your words, you may cut me with your eyes, you may kill me with your hatefulness, but still, like air, I’ll rise.”

According to the Supreme Court order, Khalid may reapply for bail in the trial court after all prosecution witnesses have been examined. If the prosecution fails to complete witness examination within a year, he becomes eligible to seek bail.

The bail denial has already sparked reactions on university campuses. On January 5, JNU students reportedly raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah during a gathering marking the 2020 campus violence, further highlighting the politically charged atmosphere surrounding the case.
