Union Cabinet Approves Budget for FY 2026–27
FM Sitharaman set to table ninth straight Budget amid global headwinds and export challenges
New Delhi, Feb 1: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Sunday approved the Union Budget for the 2026–27 financial year, clearing the way for its presentation in the Lok Sabha by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
The Budget, to be tabled later in the day, will be Sitharaman’s ninth consecutive presentation and the third of the BJP led NDA government during its third term in office. It is being introduced at a time when the global economic environment remains uncertain and export growth has shown signs of strain.
Continuing with a practice introduced in 2019, the finance minister will present the Budget in digital format, carrying the speech in a traditional red-cloth ‘bahi-khata’, a symbolic departure from the briefcase tradition followed for decades.
The government is expected to outline its fiscal strategy and policy priorities for the coming year as it seeks to navigate external challenges while supporting domestic economic momentum.
