Massive Rs 28,602 Cr Boost: Cabinet Approves 12 Smart Industrial Cities to Power India’s Manufacturing Sector
New Delhi, 28-08-2024: In a major step towards strengthening India’s manufacturing sector, the Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the establishment of 12 new industrial cities across 10 states, with a significant investment of Rs 28,602 crore. These cities are strategically planned along six major corridors, marking a significant leap forward in India’s journey to enhance its manufacturing capabilities and economic growth.
The newly approved industrial areas will be situated in Khurpia (Uttarakhand), Rajpura-Patiala (Punjab), Dighi (Maharashtra), Palakkad (Kerala), Agra and Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh), Gaya (Bihar), Zaheerabad (Telangana), Orvakal and Kopparthy (Andhra Pradesh), and Jodhpur-Pali (Rajasthan). These projects are part of the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme (NICDP), which aims to create a robust network of industrial nodes and cities that will significantly boost the nation’s economic growth and global competitiveness.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, announcing the Cabinet’s decision, highlighted that the industrial cities will be developed as greenfield smart cities of global standards. The focus will be on equipping these cities with advanced infrastructure to support sustainable and efficient industrial operations. The development of these smart cities is expected to not only boost domestic manufacturing but also create a significant number of job opportunities. The NICDP is anticipated to generate around 1 million direct jobs and up to 3 million indirect jobs through planned industrialization. Furthermore, these projects are expected to unlock substantial investment potential, with estimates suggesting an infusion of about Rs 1.52 lakh crore. The development of these industrial corridors represents a transformative shift in India’s industrial landscape, paving the way for enhanced economic activity and positioning India as a key player in the global manufacturing arena.
The Union Cabinet’s decision to approve these 12 new projects under the NICDP underscores the government’s commitment to fostering economic growth through strategic investments in infrastructure and industrial development.
