Union Minister Pabitra Margherita, Bihar Governor Syed Ata Hasnain to Represent India at Ayatollah Khamenei’s State Funeral

High-level Indian delegation reflects New Delhi’s continued diplomatic engagement with Tehran as strategic ties remain significant despite global geopolitical challenges.

NEW DELHI: India is set to be represented by Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita and Bihar Governor Lt Gen Syed Ata Hasnain (Retd.) at the state funeral of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to official sources. The funeral ceremonies are scheduled to begin on July 4, drawing dignitaries and representatives from several countries.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had extended an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the multi-day funeral. However, the Prime Minister is expected to embark on a previously scheduled three-nation visit to Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand starting July 6, making it impractical for him to participate personally.

The decision to send a senior delegation underscores India’s commitment to maintaining long-standing diplomatic relations with Iran, a country that continues to play a vital role in New Delhi’s regional strategic interests. Despite evolving geopolitical dynamics and Western sanctions imposed on Tehran, India has consistently pursued constructive engagement with the Islamic Republic.

Iran remains an important strategic partner for India, particularly due to its role in facilitating access to Afghanistan, Central Asia, and Eurasia through the Chabahar Port and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). These connectivity projects are considered crucial for enhancing trade and reducing India’s dependence on traditional transit routes through Pakistan.

The forthcoming participation of Indian representatives at the funeral also aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s recent outreach to Tehran during heightened tensions in West Asia. In his communication with President Pezeshkian, the Prime Minister reaffirmed India’s commitment to peace, stability, and its enduring friendship with Iran.

Diplomatic exchanges between the two countries have remained active in recent months. Earlier this year, Mojtaba Khamenei, who has emerged as the successor to the late Supreme Leader, acknowledged Prime Minister Modi’s Eid al-Adha greetings and expressed confidence that bilateral ties would continue to grow.

In his response, Mojtaba Khamenei highlighted the historic relationship between India and Iran, emphasizing that mutual respect and shared interests have served as the foundation of cooperation between the two nations. He conveyed optimism that sustained efforts by both governments would further strengthen diplomatic, economic, and cultural engagement.

India and Iran have maintained regular cooperation in areas including connectivity, energy security, regional stability, and trade, despite challenges arising from international sanctions and shifting geopolitical alliances. Officials believe the participation of the Indian delegation in the state funeral reflects New Delhi’s balanced foreign policy approach and its intention to preserve strong relations with key partners across West Asia.

The funeral is expected to witness the attendance of leaders and representatives from numerous countries, highlighting Ayatollah Khamenei’s influence in regional politics and the significance of Iran’s diplomatic relationships. India’s presence at the ceremony is likely to reinforce bilateral goodwill while reaffirming its strategic interests in the region.

As geopolitical developments continue to reshape West Asia, analysts view India’s diplomatic engagement with Tehran as an important element of its broader regional strategy, particularly in advancing connectivity initiatives and maintaining dialogue with major stakeholders in the region.
