UP CM stresses need for robust drug control mechanism to safeguard medicine quality

Yogi Adityanath directs creation of new posts, doubling of drug inspectors, and transparent recruitment reforms to strengthen medicine safety oversight.

Uttar Pradesh, Oct 25 :  Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has underlined the need to strengthen the state’s drug control system to ensure the quality, safety, and reliability of medicines available to the public.

Chairing a high level meeting of the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) Department on Friday, the Chief Minister reviewed proposals related to the reorganization of the drug control cadre and the creation of new posts across the state.

To enhance monitoring at the grassroots level, Yogi Adityanath directed that a District Drug Control Officer post be created in every district. He also emphasized the need to double the number of drug inspectors from the existing strength to meet national standards and ensure effective supervision.

Highlighting the importance of a transparent recruitment process, the Chief Minister announced that written examinations would replace interviews for the recruitment of drug inspectors, making the process fair, merit based, and objective.

During the meeting, it was revealed that the department currently employs 109 drug inspectors, which is below the benchmark set by the Government of India. Yogi Adityanath said aligning Uttar Pradesh’s inspection mechanism with national standards is crucial for public health and medicine quality assurance.

The Chief Minister also approved the creation of additional Deputy Commissioner (Drugs) posts and amendments in the eligibility criteria for promotions to the Joint Commissioner (Drugs) level.

Further, he directed the department to define clear qualifications and fixed tenure for the Drug Controller position to ensure strong leadership, accountability, and continuity in the state’s drug regulation framework.

Yogi Adityanath reiterated that a robust, transparent, and efficient drug control system is essential to protect citizens from substandard or counterfeit medicines and to promote trust in the healthcare system.
