Uproar in J&K Assembly After Adjournment Motion on Disaster Losses Rejected

Speaker cites procedural rules as BJP legislators protest, demanding justice for Jammu; NC counters with statehood slogans

Srinagar, Oct 28: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly witnessed uproar on Tuesday after Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather rejected an adjournment motion moved by a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator seeking discussion on losses caused by recent natural calamities.
As the Question Hour began, BJP MLA Pawan Kumar Gupta urged the Chair to take up his adjournment motion to address the damages suffered due to the recent disasters. However, the Speaker informed the House that the motion had been disallowed in accordance with the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Assembly.
The decision sparked strong protests from BJP members, who raised slogans such as “Jammu Ke Sath Insaf Karo” (Do justice with Jammu), demanding immediate discussion on the issue.
In response, National Conference (NC) legislators countered with slogans of “Statehood Ko Wapas Karo” (Restore statehood), leading to noisy scenes in the House.
Amid the commotion, Speaker Rather clarified that the issue could not be taken up as it was already listed for discussion in the Assembly’s next session.
“Your resolution on the matter is scheduled for tomorrow. You may discuss it throughout the day then,” the Speaker told the protesting members, urging them to maintain decorum and proceed with the scheduled business of the day.
